Anyone ever asked you how you feel about technology in the classroom? Have you stopped to think about it? Why are educators so adamant about putting technology in the classroom? How do you really use it in the classroom?
I am passionate about not only integrating technology into the classroom but making a classroom blended. A blended classroom looks different from teacher to teacher just as a normal classroom changes depending on the teacher. Blended learning combines the best face-to face and online instruction in ways that customize the learning experience for each student, thus making content more accessible

Without even knowing it, I'm making a classroom based on UDL (Universal Design for Learning). Blended learning is a way to differentiate learning thus making learning a success to all! A blended classroom isn't just about integrating technology, it’s also about using data to see where students are struggling and where they are succeeding.
I am using technology to not only communicate information, but also to supplement what has already been taught. Technology is also used as a tool for receiving data. Using technology to grade assignments has allowed me to look at data and assess where students are having problems and where I can help them. I have seen 'success' in my classroom in so many different ways. From low performing students that thrive in small group teaching, to inquisitive students that continue their learning onto the next topic/section. Students are becoming more engaged learners as opposed to passive learners and I'm becoming more of a facilitator instead of a knowledge giver. Seeing and experiencing all the ups and downs with a blended classroom drives me to continue so much that I can teach other teachers about this. |
I want to empower and educate other educators to give students more control over their learning and thus become life-long learners. Knowing this empowers students, it can also empower teachers!
Dr. Carol Dweck introduces the concept of a growth vs. fixed mindset in her book Mindset. Through a growth mindset, we are all able to push through difficulty with the knowledge that we can learn and do anything! With a fixed mindset, you are unable to change--you either are born with it or you aren't.
You have to have a growth mindset to jump into blending a classroom (especially at semester like I did) but still find myself getting comfortable and slipping into a fixed mindset. Becoming more comfortable with failing and figuring things out is not as scary as it once was.
My fixed mindset has made an impact in my goal to achieve being a consultant. I question if a master’s degree is even needed to be a consultant or is it my desire to be recognized that I've achieved another degree? |

My growth mindset comes into play and encourages me to step out of my comfort zone and do hard things so I can learn and grow.
Is there ever really a balance to a fixed vs. growth mindset or does a teeter-totter affect continually happen?

The doubt that creeps in, which fuels the fixed mindset, questions if I'm capable of being a consultant/trainer. After all, I've only been in a high school classroom for four years and was a stay-at-home mom for 14 years. Granted, being a full-time mother is the hardest thing I've ever done but may not be viewed as such by the corporate world.
I feel I must 'prove' myself in a short amount of time since I don't have as much experience as others. This can work in my favor in that I'm more open and receptive to new information and development. |
Continually learning new technology or applications in the classroom has helped me stay up to date. I enjoy learning the latest and greatest technology and seeing if it works in the classroom. Social media has played a big role in helping me stay up to date on educational technology as well as blogs and events.
I recently attended an EdCamp conference that Comal ISD put together. I was the only one from my school district that attended and made some great connections and new friends! I also attended the TCEA (Texas Computer Education Association) 2019 conference in San Antonio, TX and was able to get the funding through my school. A fellow colleague and I presented on Friday at the conference on Blended Learning!
A growth mindset is something I've been practicing and teaching my students, but I also know I've been guilty of teaching a 'false' growth mindset. Both the Education Week and Edutopia articles were eye opening! I thought I taught my students a growth mindset but really, I was also teaching a 'false' growth mindset. I commend Dr. Dweck and her advisee/research collaborator Kyla Haimovitz for realizing that this 'false' growth mindset needs to be addressed so a real growth mindset can bloom. Now being cognizant of a 'false' growth mindset, I can help my students, other teachers and future employees I lead. |
