The TEACH (Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act makes the use of copyrighted material for academia to be used as an efficient and effective teaching tool.
Without the TEACH Act, it would be difficult to use copyrighted material for online courses. They can be used in face-to-face classes, but online courses would be different. I’m grateful that the TEACH Act was signed in in November of 2002. Before that, I’m not sure what was done with copyrighted work and distance learning. Since the internet hadn’t been around for a long time, there wasn’t much need for distance learning but as the internet made learning more readily available, it was needed. In addition to the TEACH Act, using copyrighted material is good for students to learn digital citizenship. They can learn what is appropriate and how to use the material correctly. This can be shown by the teacher in the proper way. This not only allows for learning but builds character with the students.
