I loved the story of Harapnuik's boys (COVA 2018) discovering how to fix their truck. I can relate to this, also being a parent and having experienced teaching moments to my own children. As easy as it would have been to step in to fix the situation for the boys, he ended up seeing how that situation was life-changing for them. I have experienced these 'teaching moments' with my own children and am learning how to implement this with my students.
This year I implemented my students making their own websites, basically ePortfolios. I have used it more as a way for them to digitalize their knowledge as opposed to showcasing their creativity, knowledge and learning. Andrew Rikard (EdSurge, 2015) pointed out "shifting the emphasis from data possession to knowledge production" is a sure way to go. I too want to have my students shift from just using a website as a display of information, to where it can be a way for them to use their agency to create what they've learned. Audrey Watters (Bright, 2015) writes "students need a proprietary online space in order to be intellectually productive." I couldn't agree with this more! â
Teaching students to create and display their knowledge is essential to growing and learning.
