I enjoyed the infographic that was shown during the first web conference showing the difference between digital citizenship and digital leadership. Such a great visual showing that you can go one step further when explaining digital citizenship and talk about being leaders with technology.
Mike Ribble (2015) explained digital citizenship by breaking it down into 9 different elements. They are:
School environment and student behavior include digital etiquette, digital rights and responsibilities, and digital security. Along with these categories, Ribble discusses the principles that pertain to yourself and others such as: respect (etiquette- kind words, access - recognize inequality, & law - information is someone’s property), educate (literacy -learn online, communication-tech isn't always best, commerce -awareness of personal information), and protection (rights and responsibilities -adults help children, security -guard technology and data, health and wellness -limit technology use for in-person quality time).
I believe the most important elements that deal with me as an educator and my students is the principles ( Respect, Educate & Protect- REP’s) are etiquette, literacy and digital law. The REP’s are supposed to help students throughout their education, starting with the respect part (digital etiquette, digital access, and digital law) moving into the educate principle and then the protection principle. High school students can really use and continue to learn about all 9 elements Ribble (2015) lays out.
In conclusion, along with students learning the nine elements, educators also need to be made aware. I can help with this facilitation at my school through sharing digital citizenship activities, posters to display, in-school trainings and just having an open dialogue. Overall, Ribble does an amazing job dissecting what digital citizenship is and makes a comprehensive and all encompassing understanding.
