Being able to get content/information to people, without physically communicating it to them, can be simple and sometimes quite hard. For example, when crossing the road at a stoplight, you can always look at the info graphic that is on the light post. It tells you what the signals mean and what to do when you see the signals. When there is a hand raised, you know that you are to stop and not cross the road. When you see the picture of someone walking, you know that it is safe to cross the road. Now, take that same approach with an online course. You have to be able to teach people strictly by guiding them through the process. You have to let them know what they should be doing (like the different pictured signals when crossing the road) and what process is appropriate. In addition to getting the information to the student, they need to understand why they are doing what you've designed for them to do. That purpose needs to be communicated clearly. There also have to be clear expectations and learning goals that are explained. Rubrics or detailed explanations of how everything will be graded and the overall grading for the course need to be included. Being able to include all of the above, and in a manner that is easy to navigate, is daunting yet exciting for me! I love to be able to design and this class (as well as my whole masters program) has allowed for that design and creativity to be used. Pictures above link to different activities/information that is included in my course. From playing an interactive quiz (in Quizizz), to a discovery activity (using Desmos) , and a step-by-step video (in YouTube). There are numerous opportunities for students to learn, understand what and why they're learning that and how to learn and apply that information. I have created an outline that goes through each week and includes the links to the activities, videos, assignments, handouts and more. Doing this for each week of the course helps me to make sense of the way the course is laid out as well as being a catch-all for all the materials.
