theory/principle is going to work best. Depending on the online course, different theories would work better. The ADDIE model and Bloom’s Taxonomy are probably two of the most well known design models. Bloom’s taxonomy takes the ADDIE model one step further by incorporating design or an opportunity to create. Pappas (2019) describes several other design theories such as situated cognition, sociocultural learning, Merrill’s Principle of Instruction and the SAM model and individualized instruction theory. I chose a combination of situated cognition and the ADDIE model. By combining some attributes of each, I was able to have students learn and apply that learning with adding in some creativity and application. UbD Plan Implementation In education, the big picture isn’t always communicated and we tell our students when they need to ‘turn or exit’ or what ‘ingredient they need to add’ but we don’t tell them ‘where they’ll end’ up or what they’re ‘making.’ With an online course, students do have an understanding of what they are going to study/learn about, but they still have to be guided in a way that makes sense and they know which way they’re going. Understanding by design (UbD) is not anything new to education or any profession. The basis is starting with the end in mind and working backwards. The only difference is that the steps to the end are more purposeful and deliberate. Considering all the moving parts in a course takes motivated design and structure. Using a UbD plan allowed me to outline the course and really plan out what goals needed to be accomplished in the course. In Wiggins & McTighe (2005), they show how outlining what students will know, how they will discover it, and what they will be able to do makes the UbD valuable. Importance of Online Learning With the advancement of technology and the ability for people to learn almost anywhere at any time, online courses have become easily accessible. In addition to being able to access and learn through online courses, it is still important to be able to connect students through learning. Having taken online courses through my graduate program, I have had the opportunity to decide where and when I’m going to learn as well as when I need to connect with other students. I’ve learned the value in feedback, discussions and how important they are in learning. Being able to not only design a course with content but with true learning experiences and opportunities to connect with others is a valuable part of that course design. Enduring Understanding Without a plan, learning can be lost. With a plan, learning can be precise, enjoyable and applicable. Allowing students opportunities to apply their knowledge, with some flexibility and creativity, makes learning endless and limitless. When designing an online course, all the expectations, the end results and everything in between has to be communicated clearly and consistently. In addition, there has to be an added part of cohesiveness. While people take online courses for flexibility, they need to know there’s also some opportunities to connect personally. I’ve learned, while designing my online course, that I can never ‘finish’ a course or a subject. There’s always room to improve whether it’s in the activities that are done or in the communication of an assignment. Allowing myself to improve and never stay stagnant allows students to continually grow too! References
